Summary: Amateur Fantasy 13, unfortunately it is bad in reality
Comment: I am in utter shock over FF13. I have played through the entire FF series since numero uno back in 1987. The hallmark of FF is the open-ended story where you can build and customize a team of characters and explore an entire world and yes this includes towns, mini-games, side-quests, etc. This IS FF like it or not. FFX was an abomination piece of crap. Linear stories are fine in some games, but NOT for FF. Its like making a PG-rated SAW movie, or a Mortal Kombat without fatalities, or a Mario game without Yoshi and psychedelic mushrooms. Well Square Enix you have pissed off your core audience with FF13, a thin eye-candy hack! Most of us with an IQ above 80 are not impressed by graphics alone and require a real story with real character development. Maybe Square Enix hired Michael Bay as a consultant on how to take a beloved franchise (Transformers) and utterly destroy it. They have "fixed" something that was NOT broken. If I wanted to watch a million animated cut-scenes I would watch a damn Pixar movie. Thank you for "dumbing" this down for us "westerners".

FF12 was an infinitely better game which made up for the hideous X and X2 games. Sure it had some politics intertwined with the story which was a bit of a departure from the typical FF story but I can see it as an experiment to combine elements of the real world with fantasy. More importantly FF12 was a true FF game with some revisions to the battle system that worked well! And the guild missions, brilliant! Overall it was a step in the right direction and most true long-standing fans thoroughly enjoyed it; the best since FF7.

A FF game with no towns, airships, or sidequests is not a FF at all. Controlling one character in battles, give me a break! Auto-healed after a battle, are you for real! What happend to the days of going in to a battle with 4 characters, having 3 of them die while feverishly throwing spell after spell, and then narrowly emerging victorious with 1 character left barely alive with 50 health and poisoned.

FF13 is a farce that tries to capitalize on the brand equity of the FF name, with the purpose of capturing a less-sophisticated, albeit "theoretically" larger mainstream audience. Well maybe Square Enix should've done a cost benefit analysis weighing how many "hardcore" FF fans will dismiss this title versus how many pre-pubescent teenagers will plop down $60 for this.

I play all types of games, FPS, action, sports, you name it! When I want RPG I look to the FF games among others. FF13 is not a RPG, and "Western" RPGs are anything but linear (see Fable 2, Fallout 3, Elderscrolls, Dragon Age, etc). I hope some heads will roll for this one.

What a joke, Im done!

Summary: Definitely an amazing experience!
Comment: Final Fantasy XIII is an outstanding game, not receiving the praise it truly deserves. Most people talking down to the game are just delusional, upset that it wasn't a PS3 exclusive making it impure and awful in their minds. This game has everything a Final Fantasy really needs: Intense gameplay, a developed story and characters, and a fleeting score. Don't believe naysayers.

Summary: Too early to judge completely; but both refreshing and disappointing...
Comment: This is an early review of my first impressions of the game. I have played all of the English Final Fantasy games released in the US to date, and unlike a lot of people I actually enjoyed Final Fantasy IX and liked Final Fantasy X more than Final Fantasy VII. And I am a big advocate for extremely challenging 100% turn-based battles (which is why I love Final Fantasy X). Your tastes may differ, so you should take everything I say with a grain of salt.

To start with, Final Fantasy XIII reminds me a little bit of Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core in the design of the menu frames, save points, and ridiculously over-simplified gameplay mechanics. There is not a whole lot you can do during battles in this game, you only really control one character, and the CPU attempts to mimic competent strategy for your group mates depending on their assigned roles. You cannot tweak the strategies like most JRPGs with similar concepts (i.e. Tales of XYZ, Star Ocean, etc...)

I really hope Square returns to turn-based games in the future. Final Fantasy X had the perfect battle system, swapping members in and out strategically, using skills to delay enemy turns, and unlimited time to think about strategy. As a result, the game was much harder, and much more rewarding. Unfortunately, now we are stuck with the majority of new JRPGs using mindless, uninteresting, button-mashing battle systems.

That said, I do like how you can change roles on the fly in Final Fantasy XIII, that _almost_ makes up for the game not being truly turn-based in my book. The only redeeming quality would be if they had a New Game+ mode where the battles are significantly harder. Unfortunately, "New Game+" seems to have died when the PSX bit the dust. Final Fantasy X-2 had it, but a game that bad requires "New Game+" to convince someone to even consider playing it a second time (if they even finish it a first time).

What is more, although I read numerous places that the game is very linear, it never quite hit home what they meant... Frankly, for a JRPG to have a compelling story it needs to be linear, I cannot name a single JRPG that boasted about non-linear gameplay that was even half-way decent (e.g. the abomination known as Final Fantasy X-2). But in this game, your character advancement is capped between story elements.

Although it may look like your progress on the Crystalium grid allows you to customize the development of your characters, the number of branches in the path are extremely limited (again, Final Fantasy X's remarkably similar character advancement system was far more dynamic and strategic). While waiting for the next major story element to occur (which unlocks new stages in the Crystalium tree), you will have racked up enough CP to completely fill the Crystalium tree for all of your roles and then some.

The story seems decent at the moment, but I have my doubts about the replayability of this game. I may only be compelled to play the game multiple times to try and earn 1000 Gamerscore in the Xbox 360 version and Trophies in the PS3 version.

On a final note, it is nice to see the Datalog concept being used more often. In games like Star Ocean and Xenosaga, the plethora of information available in their dictionaries made the story much more engaging. In Star Ocean's case, it helped alleviate some of the boringness of unchallenging twitch-action real-time battles and in Xenosaga, it helped make sense of the VERY LONG cut-scenes that took place everytime you walked more than 5 feet.

Overall, I have enjoyed the game so far - it has not moved me the way that Final Fantasy X did from the very first hour of gameplay on, but it also has not driven me to regret my purchase like Final Fantasy X-2 did :)

-:- 4.5 out of 5, points lost due to unchallenging action-based battle system

* Final Fantasy XII's Gambit system made up for this flaw, but Final Fantasy XIII lacks any sort of complex strategic element.
